The Paris Agreement calls for a deep and fast reduction in GHG emissions. Recent studies show that circular economy can significantly reduce emissions by improving resource and material efficiency practices. However, most large-scale Energy System and Integrated Assessment Models used for mitigation analysis ignore or do not adequately represent circular economy measures.
The current study aims to fill this research gap by enhancing PRMOTHEUS, a leading global energy system model with a representation of energy efficiency and circular economy features. The scenario-based analysis offers an improved understanding of the potential, costs and impacts of circular economy in the decarbonisation context.
The study shows that bridging circular economy and climate change can be key for achieving deep emissions reduction while improving resource efficiency and materialefficiency.
