Assessing the implications of bioenergy deployment in the EU in deep decarbonization and climate-neutrality context: a scenario-based analysis

Article - May 26, 2022

In a new article we explore the challenges and opportunities associated with bioenergy deployment in the EU deep decarbonisation context.

We look at four scenarios, which explore alternative mitigation pathways based on different emission reduction targets ~at least 80% emission reduction by 2050 compared to 1990 and net-zero emissions by 2050~ and different mitigation options, including electrification, behavioral changes, and synfuels.

A key findign of the analysis is that the large-scale deployment of bioenergy requires the supply of energycrops and additional agricultural land to become avaialble as well as regulatory coherence and proper market design for addressing the needs of different actors such as farmers, technology investors, and distributors to final consumers.
