This research work reflects the socio-economic and socio-political situation in Western Macedonia, Greece and discusses how the policies implemented as part of the lignite phase-out can ensure a just transition for households and businesses in the region. Although there is no blueprint for successful low-carbon transitions of carbon intensive regional economies, the main target of this paper is to understand the impacts, challenges and opportunities of decarbonizing Western Macedonia.
