Professor Pantelis Capros addresses the 12th SEE Energy Dialogue

Today marks the final day of the 12th South-East Europe Energy Dialogue, hosted annually by the Institute of Energy for South East Europe (IENE). The dialogue provides a platform for experts to address the most pressing energy and environmental challenges facing the world today and to discuss ways of tapping the potential of South-East Europe as energy hub. The event is held online under the auspices of the Hellenic Ministry of Environment and Energy, with the support of regional organisations and the private sector. Titled “In Search of a New Energy Direction”, it aims to unpack the opportunities and pitfalls associated with the energy transition in the SEE.
Pantelis Capros, President of IENE’s Scientific Committee, presented the key findings of the modelling work underpinning a recently completed study regarding the introduction of carbon pricing in the power and district-heating sectors of the Energy Community Contracting Parties. The study, commissioned by the Energy Community Secretariat to E3-Modeling and KANTOR concludes that adopting carbon pricing and eventually adhering to the EU ETS is an essential policy instrument, if Energy Community Contracting Parties decide to embark on a climate-neutral pathway. A critical condition for carbon pricing to be effectively set up in these countries is power and gas market integration, which allows alleviating adverse effects of carbon pricing, accelerating investment in RES, avoiding stranded costs, maintaining system reliability and mitigating impacts on consumer prices.
